After a hearty meal that I desperately needed, I headed over to the famous Sign Post Forest in town:
If you missed yesterday's report, here's the history behind the Sign Post Forest:
... then sauntered through to the west side....
... then strolled up to the northern section....
... backtracking across the middle....
.... rounding a corner...
... then straight south...
... until I found THE place.... for MY sign to go:
Here's what the 5,250 miles looks like:
Since I had no idea what my mileage would be by the time arrived I couldn't have a total
added to the sign before my AZ departure. I hesitated to write Phoenix on it since
it's hard to exactly say when this journey started. A week before the AZ departure
I was on the East Coast 2007 journey, though on a different “motorbike” as they say up
here in Canada. I decided to write Phoenix on it since that is indeed the V-Strom's
mileage since we departed AZ. Most people will probably think it's a typo or that I
went to AK first and was headed back. Kobi and I plan to come through Watson Lake
about 3 weeks from now so I'll have to stop and visit it, see if it has any new friends,
etc. If anyone in the future is visiting the Sign Post Forest and wants to check
on my sign, it's facing south (bike is tagged from TN, seemed fitting), which means it's
facing the Alaska Hwy. The “landmarks” in the forest that would give away it's
location would be that large “Kirkland” sign and the Texas shaped sign. The town
of Watson Lake is constantly adding new posts to accommodate the popularity of such ALCAN passing:
This afternoon I went to the Northern Lights Center to watch a planetarium show on the Yukon and Northern Lights...
Obviously I couldn't take pics during the show, but here's one before it started:
The common sight of 18 wheelers in the US is not so common here in BC/Yukon. In this
country, it's 30 wheelers:
By the way, that photo was taken at 10:00 pm local time (PST).... way cool!
Tomorrow I'm back on my horse, heading towards Whitehorse, YT, where I will reassess my
rear tire's wear and decide whether or not the Top Of The World Highway is a go or not. Who
knows, maybe I'll get a new tire in Anchorage and backtrack!
