July 26, 2007 - Pre-2 Chicks, 2 Wheels!

I awoke this morning to the rare sound of sirens, something not uncommon to city life.  Perhaps since I've spent the last several weeks in rural areas, I've grown accustom to the sound of silence greeting my awakening.  Nonetheless, I can't wait to get out of here and away from the noise, the trash, people who perpetuate both, and back to spaces where Mother Nature rules.  However, there is one thing I like about Anchorage – it has an international airport, one which will welcome my dear friend Kobi tomorrow!!    WAHOOOOOOO!!!  Yes, less than one day until the “2 Chicks, 2 Wheels” part of this journey commences!

I decided to take a quick ride over to the airport this afternoon just to make sure there wasn't any road construction or delays that I might encounter tomorrow.  Ok, so it was an excuse to ride after I went here:

I didn't find any issues en route to the airport, but I did come across a few rather odd sights after I arrived like, well, this:

No explanation to offer for that sign.  I only saw parked cars in the lot and a seabird and he wasn't on a cell phone.

I didn't try to figure the cell phone thing out since the next sign was rather jolting:

Yeah, I know... HUH?!  I've ridden a LOT of miles and roads and never, ever have I seen that warning.  Just a few minutes later I was, um, yielding:

I'm not accustomed to merging lanes with airplanes nor am I use to seeing them skip on water either:

After seeing the next sign I wondered what percentage of people who passed it could even explain it.  Don't forget there are people here in AK asking “Do moose lay eggs?” for goodness sakes!:

Yes, let me reiterate all this was at the Anchorage International Airport, a place deemed the “Air Crossroads of the World”:

Ok, so a little about this journey Kobi and I are embarking upon.  During the next 10 days we will cover approximately 2,200 miles, the longest Kobi has ever spent as a passenger on a motorcycle (her driving experience is, well, um.... click: HERE).  Recently when we were talking on the phone about my ride that particular day in the rain she remarked that she had never ridden in the rain.  I laughed but then the more I thought about it, the more I realized that it was true since she lives full-time in Phoenix where it rains something like a centimeter a year.  The rides we've taken together (what's referred to in the motorcycling world as “ riding 2-up”) have all been in Arizona and the Southern California area, unlikely places to encounter rain during the winter and early spring months, the only times I am at my house in AZ. I'd be willing to bet that her dry streak will end before she boards the plane in Prince Rupert, BC.    Anyway, here's what our route looks like:

Yes, photos will be posted daily and I'll try to include at least a brief Journey Report, if nothing else so her family in Glenwood Springs, CO and her co-workers in Phoenix can see that she too has not been eaten by a bear.
