August 3, 2007 - 2 Chicks, 2 Wheels - Watson Lake, YT to Dease Lake, BC

Before leaving Watson Lake, YT today, I told Kobi we would make a stop at the famous “Sign Post Forest” in town so she could see the unique place and also see my sign that I put up when I came through Watson Lake while en route to Alaska a few weeks ago.

If you have not been following my journey and have no idea what the “Sign Post Forest” is all about, then perhaps you should peruse my previous report (click: HERE) before proceeding.

So, I surprised Kobi with a sign to put up reflecting this “2 Chicks, 2 Wheels” thing and needless to say, she was quite excited. Here's our sign:

We departed Watson Lake heading for the Cassiar Highway (BC-37) in unbelievable weather.... bright sun and 70F temps.  When I passed through here previously it was drizzling and cool enough that I had my heated jacket on.  Today we rode all day with light gear and with sunscreen on!

Out of the corner of my eye I thought I saw something, so I flipped the Strom around.  Lo and behold...

...but she wasn't alone!:

Mama Bear proved “defense of cubs” is strictly a grizzly bear trait and ran into the bushes.  Meanwhile, Baby Bear #1 climbed a tree, while #2 and #3 skamped into the woods:

Kobi and I sat on the bike simply in awe of this little bear cub.  We listened to the cub scratch the tree and make a sound neither of us can describe.  Kobi's description is “a cross between Chewbacca and a duck”, so I'll go with that.

We waited and watched very quietly, then back came Mama Bear and down came Baby Bear:

His siblings went about the business of eating berries and romping while he took a break and scratched his ears:

After all the energy expended climbing up and down the tree, pawing branches, eating, chasing his siblings and mother, this little guy was apparently pooped and took a nap:

Continuing on towards Dease Lake, here are the remaining photos from today.  After yesterday's mileage, today was a planned short day with only 165mi covered...

An attempt with the camera's timer:

2 Chicks, 2 Wheels, of course....
