August 14, 2007 - Yellowstone National Park

I couldn't outrun the sun last night and with deer everywhere I was forced to find a campsite that would have to make do.  I love to ride (um, live) too much to risk a collision with Bambi and called it a day when I found Federal land (BLM) off a gravel road that was beside the Madison River (famed fly fishers waters and same river that runs through Yellowstone).  I can set up camp and my tent in less than 6 minutes, which is about how long I had before the sun went down, and did so under the watchful eye of a pair of antelope.  I was amazed they just continued to eat as I unloaded the bike.  After setting up the tent, I stretched out on the picnic table and gazed at the wonder of the celestial display.  The eastern view was simply awesome; the smoke from the fires blocked the western sky.  I awoke several hours later when the Montana wind kicked up and blew a tumbleweed type thing on me.  Anyway, the topo software I consulted before departing this morning said there were mountain peaks on both sides of my location that ranged from 8,000 to 10,000 feet.  Unfortunately, I was lucky to see just a few miles ahead of me when I broke camp:

...some of you will notice the glove I'm wearing is a heated glove.  Yes, it was a chilly upper 30s this Montana morning; quite the contrast to the triple digits many parts of the country are experiencing at current!

Webmaster Note: My Mama always taught me that if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all.  Since we've been in triple-digits and half-hundred humidity for 3 weeks I'm just gonna keep my mouth shut!

Onward to Yellowstone National Park today, home to several National Park Passport stamps to add to my collection (my current list: HERE):

Sadly, Yellowstone was also effected by smoke from various fires.  West Yellowstone got the smoke from the ID/MT fires while the east entrance to Yellowstone was actually closed due to a raging fire just outside the park.  That east fire looked like this from the park loop road and across Lake Yellowstone:

More to come on my adventure today.  For now, here are the photos:

“Mo” the moose had a great ride today:

A smokey Yellowstone:

“Hey, Bubba, get the kids and git over here!”
