I’m preparing to leave this week to ride from AZ back East. I’ve made an adjustment to some of my gear for cold weather and wanted to make a test blast with it before I started out on a 4k mile trek. Since Jim just finished fabricating something for the Strom I figured a full test blast was in order. I try to learn from my mistakes like “Oh, I’m sure it’ll work fine” and head out only to find out what worked in a short test ride became miserable, downright evil, or perhaps inoperable after significant time in the saddle.

So I did indeed work the Ton Up booth at the International Motorcycle Show this past weekend. It was great to see folks I haven’t seen in a while since many ride many miles like myself and spend the summer on the road. I was very pleased to see Bob and Heidi Still (yes, the Iron Butt icons—only married couple to ever finish the Iron Butt Rally on separate bikes and did so in last year’s Rally). I rode w/Bob earlier this year to Canyon de Chelly, AZ where he introduced me and RTJohn to the world of collecting National Park Passport Stamps (the IBA certifies the efforts of collecting stamps). Well, that was over 7 months ago and I now have over 165 stamps. When I saw Bob I was sure to let him know he is to blame for creating the stamping insanity that has ensued since that first stamp we got together.
His response was “addicting isn’t it?!” I have a photo of that day w/Bob somewhere that perhaps I’ll dig up. (…………………………..click on the “MORE” link below………………………………..)

My friend had another basketball game so I headed into central Phoenix to watch him play. I didn’t pass any fighter jets or anything weird this time and when I walked into this particular gym I saw a normal mascot so all is well, right? Nope. As I was walking up the bleachers I heard someone yell “Let’s go Tierra, play defense!” I assumed they were merely offering boisterous encouragement to a particular player until after I got to my chosen seat and sat down, I saw that the opposing team was wearing jerseys that said “Tierra” on the front. Being only fluent in the English and Southern I had no idea what the Spanish word really meant. While waiting for a friend to arrive who I knew would be able to translate for me, I listened to “C’mon Tierra you can do it!!”, “Go Tierra Go!”, and other Tierra cheers. Well, my friend arrived and did indeed translate “Tierra” for me. Ready? You sure? Ok, LAND.

Yes, it means “land”. The school’s full name was “Tierra del Sol” or “Land of the sun.” So, bascially the cheers translated to “Go Land Go!, Let’s Go Land!” and the like. You gotta be kidding me?!

I can’t believe just last week I went to a gym and saw Fighting Artichokes and this week I watched Land run up and down a basketball court! At this point I’m thinking the extreme heat here in AZ has wilted the part of the brain of those responsible for making decisions in this state about school names and nicknames.
Speaking of odd, did you know that a motorcycle can legally pass on a double yellow line in the state of Vermont? I learned that this summer while at the BMW International rally in Essex Junction, VT. Another interesting bike law I learned this summer involves the state of Wisconsin. A motorcyclist may proceed through a red light after waiting 45 seconds if the light does not recognize the presence of the bike. Wonder how frequently this is heard: “Your Honor, it really was a full 45 seconds.” BTW, if by chance you’re wondering what my answer would be to “If you could change/make one motorcycle law what would it be?” the answer is: Lanesplitting legal in every state!!!
Tomorrow I head to the International Motorcycle Show here in Phoenix that’s being held at the new Cardinal Stadium. I’ll probably post something a/b the event after the wkend festivites are complete.
