Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Take The Best Selfie EVER!
You may have seen pictures of thrill seekers precariously hanging from a rock ledge with only fingertips keeping them from falling to their death. Crazy, right?
Well, it’s not as dangerous as you might think! Turns out this popular rock is perched over a ledge. The secret is in the position of the camera. When the camera is held just right the ground below disappears, creating the illusion that you are dangling thousands of feet in the air. This is a must-do for those who love unique experiences and great pictures.
The spot is know as Pedra do Telegrafo and it’s located in Barra de Guaratiba, a small beach community about 45 minute from Southern Rio de Janeiro. To get here you’ll need to hire a driver/cab or, if you’re not in a hurry, you can take a bus. Luckily my friend Hayden connected us with Rodolfo who lives in Rio and had done the hike once before. We had a great time with him and his friends.
Getting to Pedra Do Telegrafo
Pedra Do Telégrafo gets very busy, especially during holidays and weekends, so you’re going to want to leave early in the morning to avoid the crowds. We’ve been told by locals that people regularly wait hours on busy days just to get their chance to take a few pictures on the rock. So leave early! We left at 6 AM.
You’ll have you choice of trails to reach the rock. We did both. One is very steep with lots of loose dirt and washed out trails (we went down this way). The other route is a much more gradual accent. The trail is marked, though you really have to be on the lookout for the markings – a small yellow boot.
