Although I haven’t posted any updates since returning from the
“FJR Fall Full Circle”
last month, I have been quite busy on another journey: the road to rehab! The left ankle
injury I sustained when a tree root jumped up and attacked me while I was hiking in Montana’s
Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness (report:
HERE) turned
out to be a bit more extensive once I got back to Phoenix and had it evaluated.
In fact, I was in a walking boot cast for a while, but thanks to Dr. G.A.'s willingness to work with someone who doesn't
sit still very well, I wasn't really all that limited. Besides, I've got LOTS of motorcycle riding experience with a boot
cast on having had two prior repairs on my left Achilles tendon, (seriously, I'm willing to bet I have
more miles in a boot cast than many do without!) which is why I kept rollin'... WOO-HOO!!
Aside from the curious questions along the lines of “Were you injured from a motorcycle accident?” and strange looks I got
while piloting my bike, it was smooth sailing, er, shifting. I didn't post any photos or reports during the time I was
booted up since I figured my in-box would be inundated from the, shall we say, um, overly concerned folks
out there telling me I was completely nuts. Frankly, I'm too fiercely independent to let such feedback deter me,
but while recovering from an injury I'd rather surround myself with only those who support me. Now that I'm out of
the boot, here's what it looked like:
Just in case someone is wondering, my Yamaha FJR1300 was the easiest to ride versus my Suzuki V-Strom
DL1000 or Honda CBR600 while wearing a boot cast since the FJR only has 5 gears.
Of course, I rode to my doctor's appointments. People, this is prime riding season in this area to be
couped up in a four-wheeled cage! Actually, I think they got a (no pun intended) kick out of having someone arrive with a bootcast with bug splatter
and road grime on it:
Recently I asked the good doc if riding back to Tennessee for Thanksgiving would be a problem. He
laughed, said “Seriously?” a few times, then just shook his head and said “You're pushing me on this
one. Let's see how you do in rehab.”
I was so concerned he might not give me the green light to trot back on two wheels to Tennessee and
that I'd be unable to snag a plane ticket a week away, I decided to just go ahead and, ugh, ugh, ugh
fly. Besides, I figured a certain 87 year old Matriarch would be more at ease with this plan.
However, the "gladiator-like effort" that has been happening right here....
... has awarded me the green light for my next plan - a week or so after I return from Nashville I've
scheduled to ride and camp in Death Valley National Park before meeting friends in Vegas for the Cher
concert. WOOT!!!
Stand-by for a full report! For you Journey Report fans, this past week I did a day ride
with my Phoenician friends, Russ and Ron. That report is
HERE!
Happy Thanksgiving!!
