FJR Fall Full Circle 2009
August 18, 2009 - Hiking in Tahoe

Another awesome day spent in nature and thankful to be alive and able to seize the journey!!  I'll post more later but these are photos from my 7.5 mile hike near South Lake Tahoe today.

I'm off to dinner with friends and then riding to the Reno airport to meet Kobi, who I surprised with a plane ticket after arranging with her boss for her to take time off from work (thanks again Dr. Hershey!).  I told her via a card that said: “Roses are red, violets are blue.... I'm going to Tahoe, and so are you!”.    I know she will certainly enjoy getting out of the blazing inferno of Phoenix and into the cool mountain temps here in Tahoe.

I did the Woods Lake to Winnemucca Lake to Round Top loop (clockwise):

Ready to go on hike?  Let's go....

The 2 mile hike from Woods Lake to Winnemucca Lake is all up hill.

No one I know has a clue why this “historical” artifact is on the trail....

...since it really just looks like a fire ring someone made:

Where I'm headed...

Round Top peak is just over 10,000' elevation, the trail tops out at 9,400', which may sound impressive except that I started out at 8,200':

It sounds impressive to say you hiked

I planned my time in Tahoe when “tourons” would be at a minimum, including the timing of this hike.  It worked out well.  I only saw a couple from the San Fran area (ironically, they lived very close to where I had just hiked in Sausalito less than 48 hours prior!).  I actually remembered to ask someone to take my photo (despite being frequently reminded by a certain 86 year old!):

How many of ya'll played in snow on this mid-August day??

Elephant Back and Winnemucca Lake:

Other than birds, the only trail critter I saw....

Caples Lake (right) and Kirkwood Lake (left) in the distance:

Despite passing this countless times when doing this hike, I've never known the story behind why there is a an old car way up in the dang mountains!

Geez, the Matriarch will be happy... two pics of me in the same day!:

A shot of Wood's Lake from above...

...and then after hiking down, where my bike was parked:
