Dang, it was a bit chilly this morning when I got up early at a campground here in Wyoming's Grand
Teton National Park to go snag a site at the highly coveted Jenny Lake Campground! I rolled
out at 6:45am with enough light to feel comfortable I'd see a critter if they were in my path! (By
the way, I leave my motorcycle's clock on Arizona time since I never have to change it given AZ doesn't
recognize Daylight Savings)
Wonderful sunrise as I rode the 30 miles from my campsite at Colter Bay Campground to the Jenny Lake Campground:
The elk were enjoying a nice morning graze:
Aside from the wonderful views and being right on Jenny Lake, this campground offers a noise-pollution
free zone from RV'ers and people who prefer to seemingly drag their entire house with them to the
woods. (These are the same people who will also say they are there “to get away from it all”
though. Um, yeah, sure thing camper.)
Everything here is about the bear – the warnings are EVERYWHERE you turn:
“Early bird gets the worm”... and apparently a campsite too! I scored a GREAT site - - site #1 to be exact:
View from my tent:
Not a bad place to call home for the next few nights, huh?
After setting up camp, I saw this little guy and started having flashbacks from my
campsite at Crater Lake!:
Not following the “If it smells to a bear, lock it up” rule is STRICTLY enforced here, more so than
at any park or place I've ever seen. The people camping in the site closest to mine left a
clean cooking pot sitting out on the table, which awarded them a warning ticket from park patrol:
Because the pot didn't have food contents only a warning was issued. I learned that if ANY
animal (bear, bird, squirrel, doesn't matter) eats something from your campsite it is an automatic
$225 ticket. Yup, it's serious stuff here. You may think it's harsh, but perhaps you
don't understand that careless touron behavior leads to this...:(this was a photo posted at
registration kiosk which I took a photo of):
...and it leads to this:
Husband and wife ticketing team:
Another interesting sign at the kiosk:
Went on hike today as well. A mere 6 miles that mostly followed the shores of Jenny Lake:
You just never know what you'll find on your hiking trail, such as bear markings on a tree...:
...or this not too far off the trail: (a cow, female moose)
Seen later in the evening:
Another great day spent in beautiful country! I'm preparing for a big hike tomorrow, which I have no
doubt will be epic!
