FJR Fall Full Circle 2009
August 30, 2009 - Grand Tetons National Park - A Day Off The Trail

After yesterday's 22 mile “Paintbrush Cascade Canyon” hike here in Grand Teton National Park, I decided in the best interest of self-preservation I'd better take a day “off” from physical activity even though I felt absolutely GREAT!  I wasn't the least bit sore, which included my twice repaired Achilles - - WOO-HOO!!!!

So, I left my campsite at Jenny Lake Campground to run, um, I mean ride my motorcycle, down to Jackson Hole here in Wyoming to do, among other things, laundry: (This place gets an A+ for super fast WiFi!):

....and to resupply since I've been eating like a growing teenage boy; I'm guessing the 80 miles of hiking in the past week likely has something to do with this!  (The “Jackson Whole Grocer” also gets an A+ from me for carrying camping/backpacker food! Woot!):

Mo had 2 requests today, one being to stop here:

They had an interesting array of t-shirts inside.  A few I'd file under “Shirts not to wear when going to the Matriarch's house”....:

...especially this one!:

Mo's other photo request today:

Looked like my 16 day streak of being on the road in dry and simply delightful weather was about to end while leaving the post office in Moose, WY and heading back to my campsite at Jenny Lake Campground:

I decided to stop at one of the turnouts to investigate a roadside marker:

What the marker is describing:

A view to the northeast of camp:

I arrived back at my campsite, covered the bike, and less than a minute later... hail!:

Thankfully, it was a quick storm and the dark clouds sailed right on over, leaving a clear view of the mountain peaks at sunset:

Every night at 7:30 there is a “Ranger Talk” in the campground.  A ranger will do a hybrid lecture/show & tell on some various subject pertaining to the park. The ranger tonight discussed tracks that are seen in the Grand Teton National Park:

...which included a hand-out:

Any idea what animal this track belongs to?

It's a wolf!  Yeah, freakin' huge!

The ranger also discussed signs other than tracks that animals have been in an area.  One particular photo that she handed out was rather striking I thought, so I took a picture of the photo – it's tree markings from a Grizzly bear:

Speaking of bears, you can not visit this park and not be inundated with bear information.  Signs are literally EVERYWHERE.... the bathroom, trash cans, anywhere there is food served, stored, or sold, parking areas, on the trails, etc., etc.  Every picnic table has this one:

Upon registering for a campsite, you are given 4 pieces of paper, 3 of which pertain to bears:

I haven't seen any bears in camp, but last night I did wake up to the sound of munching VERY close to and literally surrounding the entire tent.  It was quite odd to say the least!  I was able to stick my camera out with one hand, snap 2 photos, then immediately cast a light out so I could see what creatures were enjoying a buffet outside my tent.  This is what the photos returned (which isn't zoomed):

...and my light showed Bambi and at least a dozen of her best friends enjoying a late night snack of foliage.  The flash of my camera didn't phase them whatsoever.  Trying to fall back asleep to this sound was not exactly easy, but I certainly wouldn't trade the memory of doing so for anything.  Ah, the sounds of nature!
