FJR Fall Full Circle 2009
September 1, 2009 - Cody, WY

Spent the day here in Cody, WY addressing a few details, spending time off the bike and off the hiking trail, and evaluating some of my upcoming plans in terms of weather, routing, etc.  I also changed the oil in my bike (2007 Yamaha FJR1300), and I figured out why one of my GPS units failed to turn on this morning.  I'm heading out in the morning to ride Wyoming's “Chief Joseph Pass Scenic Byway” as well as “Beartooth Pass Scenic Byway”.  I'm planning on camping and hiking in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness for the next few days so subsequent photos and Journey Reports will be delayed since the chances of me picking up a WiFi signal in my tent are about as good as the 86 year old family Matriarch doing a wheelie down the driveway.  Below are the photos from today....

For some reason when I plugged in my GPS unit this morning, this is what I saw:

...a black screen! Yikes!

Since I run two GPS units on this bike, I was quickly able to determine it wasn't the unit itself (both units fired up one the other cord just fine).  At first I thought it might be connection:

...so I cleaned it with a pencil eraser then re-attached the GPS... nope, no dice.  Onward to figuring out the problem...:

...I used my camping stove fuel tank to prop up my bike's fuel tank, which one passerby thought was kinda funny so I took a photo of it (um, dude, it's doing the job ain't it?):

Found the problem:

I have no idea why my Garmin 2610 unit is blowing fuses, albeit very sporadically.  It's happened several times over the past 25,000 miles on my other bike (V-Strom DL1000) and now once in 4,000 miles on my FJR.  The unit probably has 200,000 miles on it so maybe it's just getting tired?

WOO-HOO, both firing and ready to roll again!:

A relieved walk to visit the local National Forest office, where I was able to get information about some of the upcoming hikes I'd like to do:

While on the walk, I was able to get a few shots of Cody, WY:

The car wash where you live have a sign like this?

Doing an on-the-road oil change is easy if you ask me since there is usually a Walmart around every corner:

I can buy the oil and borrow a drain pan and funnel from the guys in the Lube Express department...:

...then give 'em back the used oil, and I'm back on the road in no time!:
