FJR Fall Full Circle 2009
International Falls, MN to Duluth, MN

Photos from my ride from International Falls, MN to Duluth, MN, including stop to bag another National Park Passport Stamp!  The full Journey Report will be delayed until I can, well, be still long enough to write it!  I'll be “CouchSurfing” here in Duluth for the next 2 days.  My sprained ankle is doing okay for you worriers out there.  At least I can get my riding boot off today!

I opted to stay in a motel last night in International Falls, MN (along the US-Canadian border) instead of camping so I could take advantage of the opportunity to dunk my sprained ankle in a bucket of ice.  To have such a big name there isn't much in International Falls, MN, especially in regards to choices of overnight accommodations.  If you read yesterday's report you saw the “tri-bed” room I slept in last night.  This is what the outside looked like...:

...how many time have you stayed across from a 24 hour/7day a week taxidermy shop?

Let me just say that at 10pm last night this place was busy with camo-geared folks crawling all over the place.  No, I won't be posting any photos, but I do have quite a few stories!

En route to Voyageurs National Park, had to ride right beside the border and saw this:

...where they had one of Mo's cousins enshrined:

This is a photo I took of a photo at the Visitor Center because I love loons!:

The ranger at the Visitor Center showed me these eggs... she said they are (from right to left) osprey, loon (middle), and bald eagle:

She also told me where to go that I might be able to see a loon on a lake though she warned that they are starting to head south for the winter.  Apparently these around here go down to Minneapolis area where they can find water (versus frozen ice up here).  Well, I went to the little lake and sure enough there was a loon though I couldn't get close enough to it to get a good photo:

The ranger also suggested I stop and see a small shop on my way out of International Falls that had an impressive display of dead animals.  Well, she didn't word it exactly like that, but it was something like that.  I know a 6 year old who is really going to like these:

Frank, check out the arrowhead collection!:

The sign above these said they were the only known unborn moose ever known to be preserved.  Their mother was hit by a car nearby and when the authorities were on scene to harvest the remains they found she was pregnant.  They contacted the guy who owned this shop to see if he wanted the pair of unborn moose which is how they came to be displayed:

Before leaving town I came across this, which both Mo and I found interesting (especially that Smokey is a Senior Citizen):

On the way to Duluth (via the scenic route, of course) I came across more trees changing colors.  This is the “FJR Fall Full Circle” journey ya know!:

The impressive colors of Mother Nature never cease to amaze me:

The “High Bridge” coming into Duluth:

A stop to see “AeroStich”, a popular motorcycle gear/accessory manufacturer:

Today's final GPS....:

...and a map of my route:
