FJR Fall Full Circle 2009
September 11, 2009 - Duluth, MN to Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada

Rolled out of Duluth, MN heading for Canada today for a ride alongside Lake Superior:

A view of “Scenic 61” - this is representative of the road all the way to Canuck land.  I was expecting more grand views of Lake Superior, but it seemed mostly treed to me:

Most of my ride today was in fog, though mostly on the lake itself:

My friends Russ and Ron in Phoenix will want the GPS coordinates for this place for sure!  By the way, there is another pie place nearby, but Sandy and Ron said this is the locals' favorite by far:

Gooseberry Falls in Gooseberry Falls State Park (MN):

I took a very gentle walk while at the park to see how my recently sprained ankle would respond.  If you've followed me in the past week of so and seen some of the hikes I've done then you too will be laughing:

Yeah, I said gentle path:

Another view at Gooseberry:

Bagged another National Park Passport Stamp at Grand Portage National Monument!

The view of Lake Superior from the Visitor Center parking lot:

Interesting information I came across while in the Visitor Center:

Amen!:

Crossin' the border into Canada at Pigeon Point, which was painless:

One of my least favorite aspects of Canada...:

Interestingly, I was told by a truck driver at a gas stop that if you are caught with a radar detector that not only will you be fined but they will watch you destroy the detector.  Hmm, I would have thought Canadians to be much smarter than that.  Surely they've heard of eBay!  Why not at least confiscate the unit and sell it to fund something beneficial to the department, community, etc?  Geez, at least reduce, reuse, recycle, eh?  Now, with all that said, I'd like to take this opportunity to state that I have NEVER, EVER had a speeding ticket.  Zero.  Zilch.  Nada.

You know there is a big problem when there is a digital flashing warning sign!:

On the Canadian side, the highway changes to the “Terry Fox Memorial Highway”.  I stopped at the monument:

Pulled in with plenty of daylight left to my accommodations for the night... YEE-HAW, a hostel in nowhereville!:

Cool signs roadside (in front of the hostel) that hostellers make to denote their place of origin.  I didn't have time to make one as I was busy, um, uploading photos!

The hostel owners (Wilma pictured here) have run the place for 38 years!:

Michel, of all the adventurers I have ever met, I wish you the best for a change of luck for the rest of your journey!!  (He's from Germany riding across Canada west to east, hit mostly rain, gear shredded by dogs, bike stolen in Winnipeg, replacement bike only 1 week later had major disabling failure):

He told me his mountain bike that was stolen (a Cube) had 90 POUNDS (not kilograms) of gear!  I absolutely couldn't believe it.  He showed me a photo of it he had stored in his camera, so I took a pic of it!:

The hostel wasn't too far from Thunder Bay, so I took a walk down to the shore.  My recently sprained ankle seems to benefit from movement after riding followed by being dunked in a bucket of ice (the hostel gladly provided both).  The Matriarch will be glad to hear that as well as see this - -see, I'm still in one piece!!:

In case you're geographically challenged, here's a map of my route today:

End of day GPS:
