If given a choice, it's not the best idea to stay on the west side of a city if you are traveling eastbound
unless for some reason you actually enjoy traffic or you plan to get a very late start the next
morning. Sometimes though you have to call it a day where (and when) you can. For Scott, Russ,
Ron, and I that meant ending our event-filled day last night in Camarillo, CA, which is west of LA, despite
the fact we'd be getting up this Monday morning heading east towards Phoenix. To none of the boys
surprise, I came up with a detour plan which we discussed at breakfast.
Though everyone agreed it was a dandy route, Russ and Ron decided they would need to take a direct shot back
to Phoenix to meet evening obligations. So, Scott and I bid farewell to them as they headed for the
interstate to greet the 101 and Monday morning inbound traffic. Since Scott has plenty of experience
following the tail end of my motorcycle in countless detours when I'm back in Tennessee, he is never
surprised when he is involved with a bike tagged “AGIRL” involving a detour.
My idea was to head down to the scenic Pacific Coast Highway (CA Hwy-1) and enjoy riding along the coast
which hopefully would give the morning LA congestion more time to lessen. It would not only give
Scott a chance to ride through Malibu and some of the more well-known seaside towns, but the route would
allow us to slice through the middle of LA rather than having to filter through all the traffic trying to
get into LA. This may make zero sense to folks who have never had the LA traffic experience, but
perhaps a map would help. The red dots here reflect the route Russ and Ron took, while the purple
dots denote the route the “AGIRL” bikes took:
Scott and I sailed out of Camarillo heading south towards Hwy 1 in glorious morning sunshine under clear
skies and mid-50 degrees. I bet a lot of folks agree with me that you can't beat waking up to the
smell of ocean air and being on two wheels.
We had anticipated cooler temperatures along the ocean so we both left the hotel wearing heated
jackets. Just a few miles after greeting Highway 1 we realized not only would we not need to be
turning the heat on, but that we'd be needing to shed them completely! The brief stop did provide
another chance to pull out the camera though:
