Tuesday, February 3, 2009 - Bartlett Lake & South Mountain

I decided to look up the weather in Nashville today as Scott and I were finishing an outdoor breakfast in short sleeves.  Here's what he missed in Music City today...

...and this what he enjoyed here in Phoenix...

...which made for yet another great day ride! We headed to Bartlett Lake, a very popular destination for motorcycle riders in the area:

Phoenix's new Light Rail had it's grand debut less than a month ago.  I thought Scott might enjoy seeing the city from a slower perspective compared to the “spirited” pace of two wheels over the past few days.  So, I convinced Kobi and him to take a ride on the Light Rail from Central Phoenix, through downtown, and out to Tempe.  Ok, so maybe they do have that “What-is-AGirl-getting-us-into-next” look:

I know a few non-Phoenicians who would be interested in seeing some of the development in the downtown area so I'm posting the below pics (which I took from the moving train!):

I'm definitely an outdoor person, but this is easily my favorite building to be inside in Phoenix:

Chase Field, home to the Arizona Diamondbacks (formerly “BOB”, aka Bank One Ballpark):

US Airways Center, home to the Phoenix Suns:

Tempe Town Lake:

Anyone else think this sign has the words wrong?

...I certainly have quite a few friends that would agree with me the sign should read “Think Locally, Ride Globally!”

Before dinner I thought we'd head up to South Mountain Park and Preserve, which is located a few miles south of downtown Phoenix:

South Mountain covers 17,000 acres (58 miles of hiking and biking trails) and is the largest municipal park in the country.  Dobbins Lookout, at 2,330 feet, is the highest accessible point in the park, which is where Kobi, Scott and I decided to go for a bird's eye view of the “Valley of the Sun” (as Phoenix is often referred to) during sunset.  Aside from offering 58 miles of hiking and biking trails, the park also has several roads for motorized visitors (which I'll also add is popular with motorcyclists).  Scott, Kobi and I opted for the latter to get to the summit since I couldn't convince them to take the 7 mile hiking path:

Always a special moment for me to watch the setting sun while reflecting upon a “seize the journey” day and do so among friends:
